Slow down. Breathe!

weekly devotional

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” – Psalm 46:10

“You got to have this done today”, “We need this fast”, “We need this now”, were most of what I heard on a daily basis at this company that I used to work for from which I resigned a week ago. Being busy is what made their clock tick and naturally all of us involved had to follow suit just so that we wouldn’t stay behind. Our schedules were tight and whilst this brought so much benefit to the agenda of the company, as an individual I was pretty much burnt out. So many others felt the same but felt like they couldn’t do anything about it. When we are in a place where we hardly have the time to breathe, then it’s definitely time to evaluate things.

As a person and a human being, we all need to take some time for ourselves because when we choose to neglect the good of our very being, just so that we can focus more and more on work and schedules and everything else in between, we gradually lose the best of ourselves – the very thing that God created in us to shine. The only time we can actually share the best of what God created in us is when we take the time to refresh our souls and spirit.

In the Bible we see so many instances where Christ takes time to be in communion with the Father and we as Christians need that just as much. When we are always busy and in the run, we are constantly distracted and therefore never get to spend quality time with our Father. However when we choose to take rest, we can also find ourselves much more connected with God and allow Him to speak to us, our hearts and our souls. Much of our stress, worry, restlessness and anything negative simply goes away when we choose to take a moment to rest and allow God to take over our lives rather than let the god-of-busy rule over us. The presence of God is so much better and it does wonders. Try it and you’ll see for yourself.
