P-Rod – Why I Skate

“You know you are never going to get there, and that’s what keeps the fire burning.” What makes skateboarding so addicting is the never ending quest for perfection. It’s not like a video game that you beat then you’re over it. Nobody can conquer skateboarding, and nobody is ever as good as they could be, and in the words of P-Rod, “that’s what keeps the fire burning.” This thought reminds me of Matthew 5:48 where Jesus says, “You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly father is perfect.” Many people are turned off by this verse and think to themselves, “that’s ridiculous, how can anyone be perfect?” But that is what makes following Jesus exciting, no one ever is good enough or has ever come to a place of attainment. Paul says in Philippians 3:12-14, “Not that I have already obtained or am already perfect, but I press on… Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Our pursuit of Jesus is also a never-ending journey. The game is never over and the adventure always calls for more. If it was something we just attained and that was it, we would get bored and move on to something else. But since we are expected to strive for perfection and at the same time never attain it, we can pursue Jesus with all the excitement in the world and never get bored. We can’t conquer perfection, “and that’s what keeps the fire burning.”
